Third Series Summary

The possibilities offered by dental microscopes have enormously extended the limits of visualisation. Oculars have been helpful and may always have a role in dentistry, but their optics are crude when compared with the optics of a microscope paired with shadowless coaxial light source.

Increasing levels of magnification produce a squared relationship to visual activity which means 10 x magnification allows the human retina to acquire 100 x more information and 20x allows 400 x the visual information.

Microscopes do offer a return on investment. They offer better visualisation, accurate and early diagnosis, increased case acceptance and improved ergonomics. They also help to avoid unnecessary mistakes that could be prevented by using the enhanced visualisation offered by a dental microscope. One disgruntled patient can create quite a stir, and one that can be damaging to your reputation and revenue. Other intangible benefits to working with a dental microscope include confidence, pride, peace of mind and eliminating uncertain diagnosis.
