Let’s Talk Digital Impressions

Digital dentistry made easy!

Dentists and patients alike are looking for solutions that will perform restoration treatments quickly and efficiency. Digital scanning systems are revolutionising how restorative dentistry is performed and dental professionals who have integrated such systems are finding they can condense patient appointments, whilst increasing patients comfort and delivering overall better dental treatment.

Digital impression scanners make restorative dentistry quicker and easier by utilising the latest digital imaging capture technology that gives you the freedom to scan at multiple workstations. And, of course its powder free. This eliminates the need for traditional impression materials making the procedure far more comfortable and easier for both patient and dentist.

Once in digital format, the dentist can choose to make immediate adjustments to the preparation or send a file off to a laboratory to be designed and milled. The precision of digital scanning ensure ease in assessment and design of restorations either in office, or in a laboratory. This in turn eradicates need for multiple appointments for the patient.

Same Day Dentistry

The Planmeca FIT chairside CADCAM solution breaks all the barriers to same day dentistry. Almost everyone is governed by some extent by time constraints; this is one of the reasons why every practice should be looking to invest in digital dental equipment which enables them to offer ‘Same Day Dentistry’ to their patients.

Traditionally ‘lab work’ or restorations such as crowns, bridges, and veneers involved an unpleasant impression (which had to be stored somewhere among the other 500 within the practice) and took between one and two weeks from impression to fitting. A patient would have to leave with a temp until their permanent restoration was designed, milled and delivered back by the lab to the practice for fitting.

With the Planmeca FIT system, the whole process is condensed into 5 steps, treatment time reduced to between one and two hours and DDS total time 40 minutes. Furthermore, only 1 visit to the dental practice for your patient.

The Process:

  1. Prep
  2. Scan
  3. Design
  4. Mill
  5. Fit

Total Time:          1-2 hours

DDS Time:           40 mins

Open Software

Planmeca are the only manufacturer offering a CAD CAM system with open software. This means that dentists can invest in the equipment gradually at a pace that suits their budget and needs. The complete CAD CAM and milling system consists of the PlanScan, CAD CAM and PlanMill.

Each element it’s available to buy separately which allows you to start off with the PlanScan which allows you to take a digital scan of your patients’ teeth rather than using an impression, the open software allows you to send the scan to your lab for design and milling.

When you are ready to upgrade your system, you can add the PlanCAD Easy which allows you to design the crown yourself before forwarding to the lab for milling.

Alternatively, you may upgrade to the full system which allows you to digitally scan, design and mill the crown from scratch. The beauty of this system is that treatments can be done within one visit to the practice, within a 30 minute appointment slot; your nurse can take the digital scan, there is no need to store impression materials or patient impressions as digital files can be stored within your practice management software.

CAD CAM Systems

Digital is the future. Historically, to make a crown for a patient, dentists have taken an impression, fitted a temp, sent the impression to the lab, the lab mills the crown and sends it back to the dentist to fit.

Planmeca’s fully integrated CAD CAM and milling system shows integration at its best. It enables the dentist or nurse to take a digital scan of the patients mouth using the Planmeca PlanScan (no need for uncomfortable impressions), which is then transferred to the PlanCAD Easy system which allows the dentist to design the crown within the software. This information is used by the PlanMill 40 milling machine which mills the crown from a block within 12 minutes. A treatment that would have typically taken two appointments can now be done within one visit to the practice and complete within 20-30 minutes.

Referring patients for CBCT

Have you considered the negative effects of referring your patients to another practice for a CBCT?

  • Time – multiple appointments are an inconvenience.
  • Competition – by referring patients to another practice you are effectively introducing them to your competition.
  • Professionalism – referrals are old school. Lifestyles are busier than ever, patients want to attend a professional practice that has the capability to offer all their treatment needs in one place.

Have you considered the costs of referring your patients for CBCT?

If you are referring four or more patients a month for CBCT, investing in a CBCT scanner could save you hundreds of pounds a month and minimise the negative effects discussed above.

Furthermore, you have the ability to generate revenue by offering a referral service to other local practices.
